- A briefing about the Principles of Design and its many aspects
- A presentation of your assignments (photos of your room/space and an artwork)
- Collage session using newspapers and magazine pages
So, I took photos of certain parts of my room and its contents. The direction I was trying to go for was to capture the little habits I have that would give everyone a sense of who I am as a person and not just a class representative (hah). Small habits like keeping a book under my pillow because I'm a bookworm, messy study table, walls filled with posters and magazine clippings. Certain photos have murky lighting so as to evoke a sense of nostalgia, and perhaps quiet understanding (???). The photo of my cat was pretty much self-indulgent though.
As for the artwork, this is actually the second one I did as I wasn't happy with the previous one. I was feeling frustrated with myself at the time of the artwork creation (quite obviously). Made a copy of a Darth Vader painting, cut out the album cover of my David Bowie CD, scribbled out my anger with a Sharpie marker, drew eyes, used a puncher on the edges, and added a Big Hero 6 sticker for kicks. All this while listening to MUSE.
Later on during class, Mr Choy had us make faces by cutting out words/images or writing down words we've seen in the newspapers and magazine clippings. We were given an hour to produce 3 artworks.
First one I did and it's supposed to be a person with a pretty bun and a military uniform, having some form of headache (with the hands on the sides of the head). Decoding Super Mario because it's funny.
I used the words "look" and "first" for the eyes plus a shark for the nose and mouth. When I started on the face, I realised it looked like something else so I did the necessary adjustments by repeatedly writing "look first". Added a unibrow by smudging my dirty thumb on the paper. The resulting artwork was a face with a shark for a nose and mouth, but upon closer observation, the words reveal the silhouette of the bear's face. Ta-da!
By the end of the class, we've been given our assignments:
- a self portrait artwork
- to collect different types and textures of paper
That sums up everything. And so begins the Chinese New Year holidays and unhealthy snacking of traditional biscuits.
