Final Assignment: Greeting Cards

The greeting cards are finally ready to be presented! My self-chosen theme is simply titled "Goodbye", because I decided to make cards for different occasions of goodbyes, be it temporary or permanent. Personally, it felt like an interesting topic to explore the different contexts of the word. The word might mean a bad connotation to some but for this project, I chose to focus on the bittersweet, almost melancholic ones. I do believe that partings can give you closure and the necessary lessons for new beginnings and endeavours. Anyways:

Three-and-a-half pages later, I could finally start on making the cards!

It took me a whole day for all three cards, snacks and one cup of coffee included.

The first card (my personal favourite) is for the friend who had dropped by for a visit in your hometown and had you take him/her around sightseeing. So now they have cool photos as souvenirs!

^The second card is for your best friend whom you've just graduated high school with. Thanks for the memories! ((so cheesy)) This card is meant to look like a teenager collage project (which it is), haphazardly pasted and incredulous. The inside of the card features pictures of my school.

The third and final card is more of a personal subject, inspired by memories of my late great-grandmother. Being a little child meant that we didn't really share mutual interests or topics to talk about, but I remember how glad she was whenever I visited her at her home in Penang. You could say the house was the one thing that connected us, all four generations of us. Hence, the cover features a photo of the front porch of the house. I incorporated tracing paper into the design to make it look faded and waxy.

When put together, the cards may not look like they belong under the same theme, but hopefully it at least projects the same sense of dreamlike nostalgia and longing.

Week 16-17

For reasons unbeknownst to me, our lecturer decided for us to paint a variety of strokes, lines and textures on canvas. Although I do have to admit the process was quite fun. So here are the results:

I did the background image by applying dollops of paint on the canvas and brushing it with a plastic comb. I also used sponge, a plastic ruler, paintbrush and a spatula for the rest. The original painting was sans gold line but I added it in with the advice of my lecturer, only difference is that I painted the line to look like it was weaving through the black spaces. As for feedback, it was a "not-bad". Good enough.

Moving on, we also painted our distorted reflections (shown in a previous post) using monochromatic colours. I've had reflections on the side of my watch, on spoons, and piggy banks. The end result is admittedly looking a little plain, but I haven't got around to adding more reflections. Not sure if I'll have the time either..

Our final assignment consists of making greeting cards and we've been given (give or take) a week to finish it. ONE WEEK. More midnight oil to burn!
