Expansion of Ideas

Call it more of a continuation of the previous assignment, if you will. Basically, we traced the black squares on tracing paper to create interesting patterns. These were fun to make!

I noticed that the glue sort of left an imprint when I was sticking the tracing paper on. Also, crumpling tracing paper makes for some very interesting lines. How abstract..

;

This is a personal favourite. In fact, I loved it so much that I decided to lovingly recreate it by sewing thread onto paper. Needless to say, the results were less than perfect. And so is life.

;

This is one of those experimental pieces in which things actually go well together and not clash horribly. In fact, it reminds me of David Bowie dancing in a neon spacesuit. Dance on, Bowie. Dance on..

Cut and Fold; Part II

We increased the size of the squares and came up with a few of our own rules/restriction for the creation process. The rules I came up with are:

  • Create it based on a word.
  • Cut only once.

For the first rule, I included words like: book, grand, Atlantis and shy. It would be fun for an outsider to guess which words belong to which squares. As for the second rule, I achieved variations mostly by giving it different cuts or folds.

Blog 3: Malaysian Designer of The Year Award

Video featuring yours truly giving a somewhat awkward and borderline-inspirational speech as fictional recipient of aforementioned award. Not that it would've been any less awkward if I ever receive the award in real life. Enjoy!

sidenote: That is an actual trophy of mine, which I have reduced to a mere video prop. It is a sign that my glory days are finally behind me..

Transcript:
It is a huge honour winning Malaysian Young Designer of the Year award and as surreal as this is, I really need to thank my parents for allowing me to pursue my passion from an early age. They have always supported my decision to pursue art and for that, I am forever grateful. Also, this is to all my university lecturers, friends and every other artist out there who continues to do what they do. Thank you for making art and inspiring me to continue on this path. For without it, I don’t think I would have been able to be where I am now. Thank you and have a good day!

Sewing Metal; Friendly Ghosts

Found this at the local stadium and it closely resembled like thread sewn into concrete slab, which is sort of impossible..

Cut and Fold;

;

For both pieces, it was more of a question of how do I create maximum impact with minimum effort. I didn't want to give it complicated cuts and spirals. Otherwise, it would probably end up being very distracting and all over the place. Also, it was a conscious decision of mine to balance out the squares by placing positive and negative cuts side by side. This was a challenging exercise; an exercise which seemed pretty straightforward at first but revealed itself in more ways than one.

Not to say I absolutely enjoyed the process, but I gladly accept what I've taken from this activity.
