Week 7 consisted of creating a sense of movement using nothing but black, identical squares. I was unsatisfied with the first piece and so I stayed behind to make a couple more, even though class ended early that day. Our lecturer gave us the usual assignments, that is:
- Create an interesting piece featuring overlapping black squares
- Create a piece featuring rows of black squares with slightly distorted squares in between to invoke tension
Week 8 was even more relaxed and we only needed to present our work to him.
These are for the "overlap" assignment. The first one was more of a test piece. The second one is my personal favourite and was inspired by the sunrise/sunset as well as this gorgeous art by Amei. The third one was, in all honesty, something I coughed up at the last minute. The whole concept behind the third piece is that people would normally expect to see the overlaps at where the two lines intersect. Instead, I put the overlaps "off-center" and yes that would make for a confusing artwork. I literally had my lecturer staring at the piece for a good few seconds and asking me "so how does this relate to overlap???".
Moving on, we had the "distortion" assignment and the results were a little lackluster to me. My lecturer said it could have been improved by cutting my squares better as evident in the photos. Lots of crooked lines (bleh).
All in all, my lecturer was generally pleased with the results and appreciated the effort I put into each piece. Next up, our second major Principle of Design assignment. *cue Luke Skywalker's screams of refusal*
Wish me luck!
